AR102 | Introduction to Architectural Design - Shelter Design in İzmir
Assignment: Shelter Design in Izmir: The Productivity of Social Space
In this assignment, I expected to create a shelter design at a selected shores of Izmir (Konak iskele-Konak Pier, Pasaport-Gündogdu, Gündogdu-Liman and Bostanlı iskele) to promote community involvement. In order to enhance the social and cultural relationships between land and sea, I had to consider the design alternatives regarding this particular enhancement on sites. This has to be a social space providing a common ground that anyone can enter and where everyone belongs. It has to be be an appealing alternative to social spaces of Izmir such as green public areas, coffeehouses, saloons, and student centers for talking, drinking, dancing, meeting, etc. It has to be a meeting place to create an intersection of people and ideas.
Before starting the project, me and two friends of mine -as a a group-searched some example projects like this located many places in the world. After that we did a field trip to Kordon, Izmir. Our project are was between The Gündogdu Square and Alsancak Harbor. We made some site analysis to understand the environment and features of the site.
We chose exhibition and flow scenario as group scenario. I designed a shelter refers to an amphitheatre. It brings people together and allows them to watch/listen a performance/presentation/lecture/mini concert etc. outer part of the design which has different materials and levels. On the other hand, it allows to do some celebrations, exhibitons sitting&resting functions, too.
Structure made from wood panels and linear-wood elements. I used concrete, wood and grass materials with level differences to achieve the stepped-form of amphitheatre for multiple using such as sitting/lying/resting etc. I used square-framed form and volumetric triangular forms combined together to achieve the well-communucation of the two completely different forms. Thanks to the semi-opened & opened spaces of design, I achieved the smooth transition between two different spaces sharply split; one is a huge open area: The Izmir Bay and the other is massive solid blocks: Apartments of Kordon.
Goals to Achieve
Understanding physical and social characteristics of space
Analysing the relationship between social use and physical characteristic of a built environment
Developing a simple space scenario
Collaborative design considering part-whole and whole-part relationship
Understanding and using analysis techniques
Site Analysing Techniques
A- For Understanding the Site
topography: level differences, slopes
climate: sun direction, wind, shades
vista points: scenic views
vegetation: types and locations of trees, plants, etc.
other geographical conditions: relation with sea, river, lake, pool, etc. land conditions: cropped land, swampland(s).
B- For Understanding the Built Environment of the Site
solid/void relationships
building characteristics: entrances (entrance points), number of stories, façades.
functions of existing solid/void spaces of the site: car parking lot(s), sports areas, playgrounds, open spaces (with used functions)
C- For Understanding Social Characteristics of the Site
circulation (movement) patterns in the site (pedestrian and traffic circulations)
circulation directions
activity types, directions and locations
public to private relations
